Our Autism assessment protocol provides a comprehensive evaluation for diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adults. The assessment process is carried out in three parts to gain a complete understanding of an individual’s behaviours, developmental history, and current functioning, these are outlined below.
1. ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition)
The first part of the assessment is the ADOS-2, a specialist interview lasting up to 90 minutes. This standardised observational tool assesses communication, social interaction, and play behaviours in individuals suspected of having ASD. Conducted by a trained professional, the ADOS-2 involves a series of structured activities and tasks tailored to the person’s age and developmental level.
2. Developmental History Assessment
The second part is a developmental history assessment such as the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised). This structured interview typically takes 2-3 hours and is conducted with a parent or close relative who knew the individual as a child. It focuses on early development, social interactions, communication skills, and specific features of behaviour during childhood. If interviewing someone from childhood isn’t possible, the assessment may be done with an adult who knows the individual well, provided school reports can also be made available to help complete the developmental picture.
3. Feedback Session and Further Recommendations
Following the assessments, we hold a feedback session to discuss the results. If a diagnosis of Autism is made, a full explanation will be provided, along with advice on ongoing management and support. Every patient receives a comprehensive written report detailing the findings, along with tailored recommendations and resources to support the individual moving forward.
This structured approach ensures a thorough assessment, giving each individual clarity and understanding, as well as access to helpful support options.
