Autism Assessments for Children

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. In the UK, it is estimated that approximately 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and tailored support. ADHD and autism often co-exist, with many individuals diagnosed with either condition exhibiting features of the other. It is estimated that around 25% of patients with confirmed ADHD will also meet the diagnostic criteria for autism, while 30-40% of autistic individuals may have diagnosable ADHD. When factoring in specific learning differences such as dyslexia and poor working memory, co-diagnosis is common.

We offer comprehensive autism assessments for children, which can be conducted as standalone evaluations or as part of a combined assessment with ADHD. Our Autism Diagnostic Package is designed to provide a thorough evaluation, allowing us to understand your child's unique needs and develop a tailored plan. The assessment process is outlined below - please note that the assessment will be tailored to your child meaning that not all components will be required.

The diagnostic process is likely to involve a combination of the following assessment tools:

  1. Questionnaires: Parents, caregivers, and teachers complete questionnaires to provide insights into the child's behaviour and development.
  2. Developmental History (ADI-R): This structured interview is conducted with parents or caregivers to gather detailed information about the child's early development, social interactions, communication skills, and behaviours.
  3. Review of Health Records and School Reports: We examine relevant health records and school reports to gain a comprehensive understanding of the child's history.
  4.  Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2): This standardised observational tool assesses communication, social interaction, and play behaviours in children suspected of having ASD. Conducted by a trained professional, the ADOS-2 lasts up to 90 minutes and includes structured activities tailored to the child's age and developmental level.
  5. School Observation: If necessary, we may conduct an observation in the school environment to see how the child interacts in an educational setting.

Once the assessment has been completed we will provide a feedback session with the child and parents to discuss the diagnosis, if applicable, and provide a clear management plan. A comprehensive written report detailing the findings and tailored recommendations is provided for further support.

This structured approach ensures a thorough assessment, giving each child and their family clarity and understanding, while providing access to valuable resources and support options tailored to their individual needs.
